*  (23 December 2019)

Did you spot the change of dates for our January 2020 meetings?  Our first meeting of the new year will be on Wednesday, 08 January 2020 at the New Inn.  This is a one-off change and for the rest of the year, we'll be back to the first Wednesday of every month (but do remember to check out the website, just in case of changes).

Our other change, on a trial basis, is a move from the 3rd Wednesday to the 3rd Friday at the Ex-Servicemen's Club.  So the next meeting there will be on Friday, 17 January 2020.

*  (30 November 2019)

Just a few more events in the ukulele calendar for this year.  This Wednesday, 04 December, we're at the New Inn for our usual 1st Wednesday get-together.  And we're at the Ex-Servicemens' Club on 18 December for our final session of the year.  The songbook is on here and on the Facebook page.

Nicely sandwiched between our two meetings, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will be appearing at The Lighthouse, Poole.  If you're going, do remember to take your uke along with you.  The UOGB have invited audience participation for a couple of the Christmas songs (details on the UOGB website).

One thing you will notice in the new year is the removal of the individual songbooks.  All the individual songs will continue to be posted on the website, and each month's songbook will still appear

NFUF2019 (the New Forest Ukulele Festival 2019) will take place on Saturday, 18 May.  From speaking to some of you, there does not seem to be much appetite for PUPS to participate as a group, and I shall let the organisers know.  However, it's still fun to go along as individuals, meet fellow uke players, join in the singing and play-alongs and attend the workshops.  Perhaps I'll see you there.

*  (19 December 2018)

It was a great evening at the Blue Boar tonight and that brings our programme of events for 2018 to an end.  Our thanks go to the staff for putting up with us.  But don't worry, we're already looking forward to a busy year and the January 2019 songbook has just been uploaded so you can spend all Christmas Day practising for our meetings next month.

*  (05 December 2018)

An update on the Ukulele Evangelists show at the Lighthouse.  I've received an email from the Marketing Co-ordinator for Yulekulele:

" . . . . . as fellow Ukulele players (and enthusiasts!) we thought you might like to join us there for an evening of festive holiday high jinks, virtuoso ukulele, thrash tambourine and feral puppetry. However that’s not all - we were also hoping you might bring your Ukuleles along to join in the final song of the night!

We have a chord chart that we can send you if you’re interested (or you can sight-read on the night if you’re feeling lucky!) so all you need to do is bring along a Uke!

The evening is full of prizes and surprises, not least a prize to the best dressed - whether that’s all in tweed, Santa or Elvis - so a good night all round we think."

I've booked my tickets and will be taking my uke along.  Might even dress up!

I shall be standing down as webmaster, songbook editor and social secretary in the new year. After 4 years, it must be some else's turn!  I can offer full training if required.

*  (17 November 2018)

The Ukulele Evangelists are bringing their show, YuleKulele, to the Lighthouse in Poole on 13th & 14th December 2018. I know nothing about them, except they have the word ukulele in their name, so it can't be all bad.

Regular monthly "3rd Wednesday" meeting at the Blue Boar this week (21 November 2018) featuring popular music-hall and WW2 era songs.

*  (27 October 2018)

An interesting article in the latest issue of 'Ukulele' magazine (on-line and free) at: www.ukulelemag.com/stories/build-a-better-uke-club-how-to-make-your-club-more-fun-stronger-and-successful
Although it has a US focus, there are some good examples of different types of uke groups, and plenty of ideas.

*  (21 October 2018)

A couple more weeks until our next meeting which will, as usual, be at the  New Inn (on 07 November).  The November 2018 songbook has just been uploaded.

The PUPS Christmas songbook (revised 2018) is also ready.  It will be used for the regular December meetings and also for any Christmas gigs we do.  Youtube links have been updated/changed and all but one of the songs now fit on a single page.  If you work on tablet, you just need to download this version.

If you are working on paper and still have last year's version, it's time to get the red crayon out again!  "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" has been re-set in the key of [C] and is re-numbered xmas_31a.  A couple of the other songs have been dropped.

 And finally, for now, an update on one of the other ukulele groups in the area - SUSBUS meets up at the Brewhouse & Kitchen, 147 Parkwood Road, Southbourne on the 4th Wednesday of the month (it used to be the last Wednesday).  Check out the FB page for details.

*  (22 September 2018)

For our September and October gigs, we will be using the July 2018 songbook which I've just re-posted back on the songbook page.

The October 2018 songbook, for our regular monthly meetings at the New Inn and the Blue Boar, has also been posted.  We've added 3 new songs.  We are also trying out a song from Jim's Ukulele Songbook - if it proves popular, we can think about adding a PUPS version to our repertoire.

*  (14 September 2018)

I've just updated the calendar - yes, we're getting more requests in.  We do not have a fixed group of performers for our outside events so if you fancy coming along, you'd be very welcome.

And a reminder of forthcoming events:

- we're at Cherry Tree Nursery tomorrow (Saturday, 15 September).  Playing starts at 11:00.

- and it's that day again next week when we're back at the Blue Boar (Wednesday, 19 September).

*  (01 September 2018)

Now the summer holidays are nearly over, are  you ready for the new season?  We kick off with our 1st Wednesday meeting at the New Inn this week.

Don't forget, we're playing at Oakdale Library a week today (Saturday, 08 September).  The Library has already got about 60 children and families signed up for the morning of activities so it should be nice and busy (or did I mean noisy?).  We're on from 10:30.  The songbook for this gig, and the following week at Sunrise Westbourne, is now on the songbook page.

*  (29 August 2018)

And just when you thought we already had a full diary for September, along comes another gig.  We're back at Sunrise Southbourne on 28 September at 10:30 for the Macmillan Coffee Morning.

*  (25 August 2018)

It's going to be a busy September - we've picked up another gig.  This time we're at The Grange, 2 Mount Road, Parkstone on 27 September at 15:00.  Do check out the calendar page - all the events are posted there.

*  (15 August 2018)

Someone left their jacket behind this evening.  I'll bring it along to the next meeting.

A fantastic evening at the Blue Boar with several new faces - we look forward to seeing you again next month.  Talking of which . . .  the September 2018 songbook is now available for download.

*  (07 August 2018)

Not a lot going on in August but we do keep going with our two monthly meetings which means we're back at the Blue Boar a week tomorrow (15 August 2018).  When we get into September, we already have three gigs lined up:

September

05              19:30        PUPS @ The New Inn, Wimborne Road, Poole

08              10:30        PUPS @ 5th garden birthday event, Oakdale Library

12              14:00        PUPS @ Sunrise Westbourne, Poole Road, BH4 9DR

15              10:30        PUPS @ Cherry Tree Nursery, Northbourne, Bmth.

19              19:30        PUPS @ The Blue Boar, Market Close, Poole

So remember to check the calendar page to see what else is coming up.

*  (27 July 2018)

Our first Wednesday of the month seems to have come round quickly this time - we're at the New Inn next week (01 August 2018) and the August songbook is now available.  All songs chosen by Di.

We've been asked to pass the following on to uke players who might be interested:

https://louiseburnet.wixsite.com/ukesdusoleil/

I don't have any other details but it does have the word 'ukes' in the URL

*  (17 July 2018)

It may be the time for summer holidays but for those of us who are not going away there is still our monthly session at the Blue Boar tomorrow evening (18 July 2018).

*  (04 July 2018)

A busy week for our PUPS with gigs at Westbourne House last Wednesday and  Branksome Park Bowls Club today.  And they still managed to turn up for our monthly session at the New Inn.  Well done people!

Our next outing is the Cherry Tree Nursery in Northbourne on Saturday (07 July 2018).  We start playing at 11:00.

*  (23 June 2018)

The sharp-eyed among you will have spotted that the July 2018 songbook, which is now available, has 35 songs and is split into 3 sections.  It's an experiment to try using a single publication for both of the monthly meetings and any gigs we might be doing in July (but note following paragraph about the Branksome Park Bowls Club gig!).  We don't expect to do the 35 songs at our monthly meetings but it does allow some flexibility when playing gigs.

We are playing at a Hawaiian-themed charity BBQ at Branksome Park Bowls Club (Leicester Road, Poole, BH13 6BZ) on Wednesday, 04 July at 17:00 for one hour.  We will be using the second half of the JUNE 2018 songbook.

Don't worry if  you can't make that one, we'll still have our regular 1st Wednesday meeting at the New Inn that evening (and will be using the July 2018 songbook).  And check out our calendar page as we have some other charity gigs scheduled for the coming month.

*  (17 June 2018)

It's our regular monthly session at the Blue Boar on Wednesday (20 June 2018) this week.  And we'll be using the June 2018 songbook

*  (08 June 2018)

A reminder that next Saturday (16 June 2018), we will be playing at Sunrise Home's summer fete.  We start playing at 11:00 and the songbook for this gig is available for download.

*  (31 May 2018)

Ukunelly was a fantastic fun afternoon on Bank Holiday Monday, very warm in the sun, with the event raising £316.12 for Forest Holme.  Well done to all the PUPS who played and their supporters.  And our thanks must also go to Jools and Paul for organising the afternoon's activities and to Anna and her crew at the Lord Nelson for hosting it.  You'll be pleased to know we've already been invited back for next year.

Onward and upward, as they say . . . .  the June 2018 songbook is ready to download.

*  (16 May 2018)

We had a fantastic day out in New Milton on Saturday for NFUF.  PUPS were one of the last bands to go on - there are several pictures on the photos page.  We're been invited to attend the Frome Ukulele Festival in March next year.  No other details at this stage.  To wind up the NFUF week, on Saturday (19 May 2018) at 19:30, there will be a concert by Opera-lele at the Forest Arts Centre, New Milton.  Tickets £9.50.

And then on to this evening at the Blue Boar.  A lively evening with an assortment of instruments - the usual array of ukuleles and harmonicas plus a melodeon (I want one!).  And while it was offered, we had to draw the line with the trombone  (I kid you not).

*  (09 May 2018)

A slight change of plan - the Ladies have decided to issue a revised songbook for our evening at the Blue Boar next week, which will then be used for our performance at Ukunelly at the end of May.  Plenty of old favourites, nothing new.

Don't forget we're at the New Forest Ukulele Festival (NFUF) this Saturday - hope you can make it.

*  (22 April 2018)

After a full April calendar, we're looking forward to another busy month ahead.  The May songbook is available for download featuring some of our less-frequently played songs.  To make things a bit easier, we've split "Summer Nights" (N_20) into girls and boys parts.  Only one new song this month, "L.O.V.E" (x_43) and the video example for it is a tutorial from Aldrine at Ukulele Underground.

The late-May Bank Holiday sees us performing at the Lord Nelson's annual "Cider & Sausage Festival" (aka Ukunelly) down on the Quay.  More details and songbook follow in due course.

*  (14 April 2018)

We're back at the Blue Boar again this Wednesday (18 April) for our regular monthly slot. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

*  (05 April 2018)

Here's the non-FB address for Absolute Music's "Learn To Play Day"

*  (29 March 2018)

Now you've mastered the ukulele, do you fancy trying another instrument?  I've just spotted an advert for Absolute Music's "Learn To Play Day" in two weeks' time  (Thursday, 12 April 2018).  It's free (and there's a charity angle to it too). See: www.facebook.com/events/387178911687597/

*  (24 March 2018)

The April songbook, (corrected version uploaded 3pm, 25 March) for the regular meetings at the New Inn and the Blue Boar, is now available for download.  This month's theme is "Songs that Tony likes".

Four new songs to have a go at and I recommend looking at the bridge in "Beyond The Sea" - worth listening to the likes of Michael Buble (and others) to hear how it goes.

*  (21 March 2018)

As mentioned last month, PUPS have been invited to participate in PO55 at The Spire in Poole High Street next Thursday (29 March 2018). If any of you wish to come along and give support, you'd be very welcome (you don't have to be +55 to be in PUPS) and, who knows, you might find other activities of interest.

PUPS have a couple of gigs coming up in April. This is the gig songbook for those events.  (The songbook for our April meetings at the New Inn and the Blue Boar will issue separately.)

*  (08 March 2018)

Some more dates for your diary (see Calendar page) as PUPS have been booked to play at Sunrise Home during the year.

The Southern Ukulele Store (SUS) has announced some of it's upcoming workshops and gigs.  Contact SUS direct if you want more info or just to book your place.

*  (22 February 2018)

The March songbook is now available - it's less than two weeks to go till our next session at the New Inn.

*  (21 February 2018)

The choice of songs for NFUF has been finalised:

Ragtime Cowboy Joe
Cumon Feel The Noize
Surfin'USA *
Waterloo *

We will be including them in our monthly songbooks in the run-up to NFUF.

PUPS have been invited to participate in a Poole Over 55s (PO55) event at The Spire in Poole High Street on 29 March 2018.  This will be along the same lines as the Full of Life Day last October.  The event runs 10:00-16:00.  More details to follow.

PUPS will be entertaining residents at Vale Lodge in Boscombe at 14:30 on 11 April.

If you're interested in joining us at these, or any of our events, you can speak to us at the monthly meetings, or send an email to pooleukulele@gmx.com

*  (18 February 2018)

It's almost time for our 3rd Wednesday of the month meeting. As usual, we're at the Blue Boar this Wednesday (21 February 2018). Everyone welcome - even if you don't play a uke, you can sing along. We'll be downstairs again in the cellar bar.

(21 January 2018)

The February songbook is now available.  This month we are going back to basics with (mainly) 2-, 3- and 4-chord songs.  Additionally, there are three new songs, two of which we are going to try out for NFUF.  Once you see the cover of the songbook, all this will start to make sense.  Don't be put off by the number of chords in "Puttin' on the Ritz".  We have two versions, which hopefully should work together, whichever one you go for.

*  (18 January 2018)

It's official, The Lord Nelson pub will be hosting Ukunelly again this year on the late May Bank Holiday Monday (28 May 2018) from 12:00 through to 18:00. It is being organised by our fellow uke players, the one and only Jools Buckley and her other half. PUPS are on at 13:30. More details to follow.

*  (17 January 2018)

A great evening at the Blue Boar tonight, with several new faces and a wide range of instruments - hope we didn't put you off, and that you'll be back with us again next month.

*  (13 January 2018)

We're at the Blue Boar this Wednesday (17 January). Bring your new ukes along (or even your old ones). Or bring a non-playing friend along to join in the singing. This month's theme is fairly easy to guess.
